GODFOSS

Godfoss is located between Akureyri and Lake Myvatan in the north central portion of the island. Foss is the Icelandic name for falls. The falls get their name from an event marking Iceland’s official conversion to Christianity. The Tribal leaders met here and threw all of their pagan idols over the falls in an act of obedience to the church.
Like many of the waterfalls in the country, Godfoss drops off the edge of an old lava flow. This is a great place to view altered basalt columns. Several lava flows have built the area over time. The curved and twisted nature of many of the distal columns probably occurred as a new flow invaded an older one while it was still cooling.
