GULLFOSS

A short distance east of the fuming geyser fields, water takes on yet another awe-inspiring form. In sharp contrast to the thick warm steam of the geysers, cool refreshing mist rises from steep flooded crevasses also in the fracture zone. Millions of liters of water, thunder endlessly over the basalt cliffs at Gullfoss. Melt water from two interior ice caps continually feeds the unquenched fissures. Gullfoss is Europe’s tallest waterfall.
