HVITARVANTN

The central desert of Iceland gives new meaning to the term desert pavement. It is hard to say where the basalt ends and the road begins. There are few trees in Iceland. The region between the Hofsjokull and the Langjokull punctuates this fact. Land between the icecaps seems harsh and barren. Basaltic lava flows extend in all directions as far as the eye can see. Yet like many deserts, this one supports abundant life. One may have to look a bit more closely to marvel at the endurance of life in this seemingly inhospitable landscape but it is worth getting out of the car for. The area also contains a hot spring, a small perk for enduring the cold, wind and rain.
