KRAFLA

Krafla is the most currently active volcanic region in Iceland. Eruptions between 1975and 1984 spawned several devastating fires in the north eastern rift zone. Yours truly poses with a hammer full of cooled pumice. The foamy glass is so light, it floats in water. Spatter cones and cooling lava flows dominate the landscape. At the base of the flow lies an extensive geothermal area. Here it is easy to feel as though you are witnessing the birth of a new planet. Science fiction is reality in Iceland.
