MYVATAN Lake Myvatan is possibly the most beautiful and diverse location on the island. In the summer it is a major stop for migratory water fowl traveling between North America and Europe. Small black midge flies provide a substantial food source for birds as well as abundant fertilizer to the surrounding area. The long hours of sunlight in the summer give the location a sense of endless motion. The lake lies on the edge of the north western rift zone. Several calderas including Asjka and Krafla are short drives from the park. It is easy to want to stay and explore the area for the entirety of summer; however much more is to come as our journey heads south. |
