STROKUR Thirty kilometers north east of Pthingvellir, the Geysir geothermal field powers water into steam through ominous holes in the ground. Strokur, pictured first and second, is analogous to Old Faithful of Yellowstone National Park. It is the largest and most prolific geyser in the system. Eruptions average ten meters in height and discharge every three minutes. In addition to their simple aesthetic value, the steam vents also help to provide Reykjavik with power. Geothermal power comprises only about five percent of the country’s electrical needs. Hydropower supplies the island with the majority of its energy |
