Homework Rules:
1. Print out the 300 mb chart and the surface charts below.
2. 300 mb chart. Label the troughs and ridges, as we have discussed in class. Also, with a long purple arrow, indicate the jet stream or jet streams. Place a large green "D" where you would expect upper tropospheric divergence, based upon what we have discussed in class.
3. Surface Chart. There are five surface low pressure areas highlighted (with red "Low") (these are wave or frontal cyclones, as discussed in class). For each of these, state whether the low's position is consistent with where you would expect falling pressures and the development of surface low pressure area from Dine's Compensation (given where you found divergence in the upper troposphere in (2) above).
Of the five surface low pressure areas, only the position of the one located at 40N, 160W seems not to be occurring under the divergence at 300 mb associated with a trough at that level. This illustrates that there are other ways that divergence appears in the upper troposphere.
