Exercises

A. Print Fig. 1, the nam_thick (NAM initialization of surface isobars with overlay of 1000-500 mb thickness) for 12 UTC 10/22/09

1. Draw thickness advection arrows, as discussed in class last week.

2. Analyze fronts, as discussed in class last week, using correct color conventions.

B. Print Fig. 2,the Surface Data Plot (METAR observations for 1243 UTC 10/22/09 for lower Mississippi River Valley)

1. Do an analysis that will help you locate fronts(hint: draw schematic streamlines....notice boundaries between relatively warm and cold air...decide on fronts). NOTE: Don't draw isobars!)

2. Analyze the fronts using correct color convention.

C. Print Fig. 3, the NCEP/HPC Surface Analysis for 12 UTC 10/22/09

1. Write one or two paragraphs on the degree to which your analysis in A. 2 corresponds (or contrasts) with that of HPC.

2. Write one or two paragraphs on the degree to which your analysis in B.2 corresponds (or contrasts) with that of HPC AND your own analysis in A.2.
