Integrated Radar Viewer (idv) is also a java-based, platform independent data plotter and geoscience visualization tool. In that idv is intended to display all sorts of geoscience information and create maps, charts and diagrams for visualization purposes, it has many strengths compared to NCDC Radar Viewer in plotting radar information. It also has many weaknesses.

idv's 3-D/Cross-section options

Here is an example of idv's 3-D capabilities, combined with animation. This illustrates the fact that users of radar information are lulled into believing that the radar echoes are on a flat surface, projected to the ground, while, in fact, the radar beam is intersecting storms at progressively higher elevation outward along a radial.
