Joplin Tornadic Thunderstorm SREH

In this exercise you will begin thinking about your publication quality hodograph. My suggestion is that you use the program RAOB to produce the publication quality hodograph. However, the Bunkers Excel Hodograph I distributed may also be used. The results of Step 6 should be turned in during the class of Friday 2 December.


  1. Using Weather and Climate Viewer, display from the Springfield radar data the file NST (storm tracking information) for 22:48 UTC 22 May 2011. This will plot the cell tracks. The Joplin tornadic storm was labeled by the radar cell M5
  2. From the pulldown menu under the toolbar option "View", select "Supplemental Data." This will give you tabular information on storm motions for all the cells identified by the radar. Make note of the forecast direction and speed for cell M5.
  3. Open the program RAOB (under Parallels Desktop). Once the program is running, open the sounding file for Springfield for 1200 UTC 22 May 2011.
  4. As shown in class, click on the hodograph to make it large. Then adjust the program and diagram options so that you can insert actual storm motion, and display SREH for the layer 0-3 km, positive shear for 0-1 km, 0-3km and 0-6 km layers and the bulk shear for the 0-6 km layer.
  5. Either by inserting the actual storm motion into the proper menu, or by physically dragging the storm motion vector to correspond to the actual storm motion you obtained in (2).
  6. Save the hodograph as a graphic, and make note of all the SREH and shear values to insert into a Table in your paper.
