The Relevance of the CCM

By Eric Gose

The weather is a never-ending source of conflict between people in modern society. Building contractors may be accused of shoddy workmanship exposed by high winds or architects may build on dangerous slopes affected by high rains and mudslides. Since there are no government requirements detailing the qualifications of the meteorology professional, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) has created the Certified Consulting Meteorology program (CCM). The program was designed to ensure that meteorologists serving the public have been tested and meet certain minimum requirements set forth by the AMS guaranteeing competency and professional ethics in the field. The CCM also encourages meteorologists to continue their professional growth after finishing formal training and enhances the prestige and success of consulting meteorologists, thereby providing incentive to obtain the certificate.

The most important aspect of the CCM is the aspect of credibility to the client. The layperson who thumbs through the Yellow Pages in search of a qualified meteorologist has no way of knowing who is qualified and who is not unless some form of professional qualification is available. The CCM provides this qualification. Through a rigorous qualification process, applicants must show that they have the knowledge, experience, and character as set forth by the AMS. The simple fact that the road to completion is not an easy one discourages those who arenŐt serious from even applying for certification. Those of the general consumer and business population are guaranteed that a meteorologist who has received the CCM label will provide them with the highest level of service.

Once achieving the title of CCM, the meteorologist must maintain their status by continuing education in the field. This may be done by attending classes or seminars, or by simply keeping up with current scientific advances by subscribing to one of many periodicals available to the meteorology professional.

Lastly, the title of CCM provides the professional meteorologist with the status and recognition reserved for those who work hard and prove their worth. Not only does this provide guidance for prospective clients, it allows the meteorologist to offer his services with confidence and charge a premium for his talents. The title of CCM can be compared financially with obtaining a college degree. Income is directly proportional to the level of expertise as defined by the certification process.

In conclusion, the professional meteorologist who obtains the title of CCM provides benefits for both himself and his clients. By showing they are qualified to perform the services asked of them in a professional and ethical manner, continuing their education to maintain a high level of professional competence, and achieving the status and prestige awarded to those who go through the process, the CCM can provide services to his clients with confidence and earn the financial awards that come with hard work and perseverance.
