Why I Want to Be a Certified Consulting Meteorologist
Meteorology is the study of the dynamic atmosphere, in other words, weather. ItŐs challenging, demanding and a lot of hard work. And to become fully competent takes even more work and a lot of dedication.
In the growing field of meteorology, consultants are needed to apply their specialized knowledge for those who have particular needs, such as contractors who want to build homes, but worry about weather affecting construction. The process of becoming a Certified Consulting Meteorologist is done through the American Meteorological Society. The standards are set high to separate the professionals, who take the consulting certification seriously, and those who do not or lack the skills to become a CCM.
The purpose of the consulting is to provide knowledge to the general public, and certification ensures competency. The qualifications for becoming a CCM are knowledge in the specialized area, experience in the field and the character of the person.
The academic knowledge of meteorology is obtained at a qualified university program such as the one at San Francisco State University. This knowledge is further tested through a meticulous examination given by the AMS itself. The examination consists of two parts, written and oral. The written part includes various questions in the specialized field and what one might do in consulting cases. The oral part is delivered by a board of professionals and assesses how well a person can convey information in a coherent fashion that others can understand. Both must be done well to receive certification.
The experience that one has in the field, shows in his or her maturity level when it comes to decision making and how much humility he or she has. Characteristics of a CCM are of finest quality. That person must demonstrate professional ethnics when discharging their duties. One of the most important responsibilities that a CCM has to the public is staying current with meteorology.
Having a CCM title does not mean that learning has to end. Maintaining life long education is vital in keeping up with the ever-changing profession. By preserving the drive to be the best, the title sets a professional apart from a non-professional.
Becoming a CCM is important to me because it confirms that I have the essential skills needed to practice consulting for the public. I will be a breed of higher quality practicing meteorologist (itŐs like fine wine). It shows that I am serious about my field of work.
