1.    Write out the conceptual equivlaent of the First Law of Thermodynamics.  [Hint: the answer is NOT "the change in temperature equals the change in heat divided by the specific heat....etc...." (20 points)

The temperature changes experienced by an air parcel are due to temperature changes related to direct heating and cooling and/or temperature changes due to contraction or expansion.

The two images on the next pages  are the infrared satellite image for 0330 UTC 3/20/11 and the radar reflectivity image for 1754 UTC 3/18/11.

Such images tell meteorologists about something directly and then meteorologists can then make inferences.  Please comment on what satellite images and radar images show meteorologists directly and what inferences can be made from them as well.  (Note—I am not asking for you comment about what the particular images show below specifically….they are just included to provide examples of a satellite and a radar image).

Satellite images tell meteorologists directly something about cloud patterns. Meteorologists then can examine those patterns and infer something about precipitation patterns. On the other hand, radar images tell meteorologists something directly about precipitation patterns. Meteorologists can then infer something about cloud patterns.
