Meteorology 302.01, Spring 2004
Class Notes for April 16, 2004

Jennifer Lee
Darrel Aaron

We started the class by discussing hurricane George looking at the visible image and its infrared image.

How does the storm have a warm core if it has cold clouds around it?
Because warm air is converging to the center of the cyclone making the core warmer.

Model (unusually information reloaded every 6hrs up to 4 times a day)
A Model is a fifteen days in advance model.
The numbers are isotherms
The read is realistic, idealized but simplistic
In meteorology weather is simplified because of the large amount of information

Radar Station and symbols
NA- not available (this may be due to Stations for some reason are not working or down it is unknown to meterlogiest why data is unavailable)

NE- No echoes, no precipitation in sight

The three digit numbers- add two more zeros at the end of that number; the number now indicates how tall the cumulonimbus clouds are in feet.

The two digit numbers- Represents the speed of the of these cumulonimbus clouds in miles per hour

The arrows- Represents the direction and motion these clouds are predicted to move.

Doppler Radar Stations

NA-same
NE-same
Arrows- the direction of thunderstorm is moving
Hail- hail that is ? of an inch or larger (all cumulonimbus Nimbus have hail but the radar only report those that are tree quarters of an inch)

Strom Surge
Though a storm maybe weaken because of the lack of latent heat once it is on land a storm surge can be just as damaging. A storm can make the ocean water rise 15ft while in a storm surge another 8 feet of water may be added to the up roar of water and up land.

Extratropical cyclones are common in SF and California

Typhoon Sudal
Hurricane in the western Pacific
It weakened because the sea surface temperature lowered to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus the hurricane could not sustain the move northward because it is too cold.
It was a Category 4 storm
Shows improvement from two decades ago

http://www.sicorp.com gives summery of radar temperatures.
• the green colors show the active rainfall in those locations
• NA – not available (the data never got to the nation radar)
• OM- out for maintenance
• Number- add one hundred to find out the height of rain fall clouds. (this information is extremely useful to pilots because they can asses to go around the clouds or fly above it)
• Meso Cyclone- small counter clockwise motion of clouds

Movie “Raging Planet”
note this movie show the extremities of hurricanes

-gave examples of what and how people should prepare in case of a storm
-showed hurricane Burtha
-8 to 10 inches of rain, winds up to 100mph
-shows the damages that a storm can cause to a city over 250 million dollars of damage
-Hurricanes are the largest storms
-In 1900 Galveston was the worst disaster causing 12000 deaths
-Hurricane Fran in 1996 had winds at 130mph
-Hurricane Andrew was the most costly hurricane in the united state
-it hit South Florida with furry, drowning up to 24 lives
-In the Western Pacific hurricane are called Typhoon they move in a clockwise motion
-Worst cyclone killed 300,000 lives
