Homework 6: QG Forcing Terms
i. Qualitatively discuss the forcing for vertical motion at 850 mb that would occur at points A, B, C and D on the basis of the GFS 264 h forecasts included below. Be sure to discuss the contribution of each term in detail. Remember this is not a COMPUTATIONAL question, but you should descriptively estimate the terms (make sure signs are correct). (70 points)
ii. Next, based upon your answer in i., estimate the sign of the NET synoptic-scale vertical motion at the 850 mb (use "upwards", "downwards" or "indeterminate") at A, B, C and D. (40 points)
iii. Describe whether the precipitation field either is consistent, is not consistent, or, neither, with your results in ii. (20 points)
iv. Finally, to what extent would the inclusion of the mesoscale solenoid term help resolve the precipitation pattern depicted at each of the locations. Explain briefly. (20 points)
