The Thermodynamic Energy Equation is
where the definition for the static stability parameter in isobaric coordinates has been substituted into the vertical temperature advection term.
Assume that at the 500 mb level over a station in southeastern California (shown as a black box on the accompanying charts) the sensible heating term is zero.
In computations, please remember
that WXP reverses the sign for some of the quantities shown on these
charts. Remember to use the
CORRECT sign in calculations.
Compute the 1-hr 500 mb
temperature tendency at the station.
In calculating the term -w(¶q/¶p), use a Æp of 100 mb
centered at 500 mb (you will have to interpolate the potential temperatures).
Attachments
Attached to the rear of the exam are a number of charts for the time 12UTC 22 November 2004. These include: 500 mb Temp Advection, 500 mb vertical velocity, isentropic cross-section at the latitude of south-central California, and the 500 mb/absolute vorticity chart.
