Homework No. 8

This homework assignment involves use of the data that you have archived for the term paper.

1.  Using the charts you prepared for last week, comment on the (dynamic) quasi-geostrophic controls for lower mid-tropospheric upward motion directly above the surface low you are studying.

Non-synoptic Scale

1.     Fronts (Solenoidally-direct): Upward in warm air, downward in cold air

2.     Thermodynamics: Spontaneous Upward Motion for Rising Air Parcels Above LFC

2.  Using the simplified vorticity equation (and the synoptic-scaling we did for the upper troposphere), estimate the 300 mb divergence directly above the surface low you are studying.

3.  Plot the (a) 300 mb divergence and (b) the 500 mb vertical velocity directly above the surface low you are studying.
