The Department of Earth & Climate Sciences is one of eight programs administered by the College of Science and Engineering and is located in Thornton Hall on the campus of San Francisco State University. The present Chair of the Department is David Dempsey.

 

The Department offers a BA and BS in Earth Sciences, a Minor in Earth Sciences, and a Certificate in Weather Study. The BS in Earth Sciences has three emphases: Geology, Hydrology, and Ocean, Weather and Climate. The Department also offers a MS in Geosciences. The Department of Earth & Climate Sciences is an Academic Affiliate of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

Distinguished Speakers Series

Weekly seminars highlighting recent research results in the geosciences. The seminars are open to the public and are scheduled for 1-2 PM in TH 604, unless otherwise noted.

Geoclub

Students in the three emphases of the degrees administered by the Department of Earth & Climate Sciences join together socially. Students are also involved in their own research projects, or are working with faculty in researching issues at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies

The Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC) is San Francisco State University's marine and estuarine field station. RTC's mission is to advance the understanding of the world's complex marine and estuarine environments through research, education, and outreach, with a focus on San Francisco Bay.

National Weather Service Satellite Field Office at SFSU

The National Weather Service Satellite Office is a cooperative endeavor between the Department of Earth & Climate Sciences and the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Monterey. The office serves as a liason between the WFO and the media that serves the San Francisco Bay Region.
