The Department of Earth & Climate Sciences is one of eight programs administered by the College of Science and Engineering and is located in Thornton Hall on the campus of San Francisco State University. The present Chair of the Department is Karen Grove.
The Department has undergraduate degree programs in the fields of earth science, geology, meteorology and oceanography and offers a MS in Geosciences. The Department of Earth & Climate Sciences is an Academic Affiliate of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
Student Research in the Department of Earth & Climate Sciences
Students in the Department of Earth & Climate Sciences are involved in their own research projects, or are working with faculty in researching issues at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students are publishing their results in the referreed literature or presenting them at conferences..
National Weather Service Satellite Field Office at SFSU
The National Weather Service Satellite Office is a cooperative endeavor between the Department of Earth & Climate Sciences at San Francisco State University and the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Monterey. The office serves as a liason between the WFO and the media that serves the San Francisco Bay Region.
SF-ROCKS (Reaching Out to Communities and Kids With Science) is a collaborative geoscience education project between SFSU faculty and high schools in the southeast part of San Francisco. The project connects urban youth with the geosciences issues of the SF Bay Region.
SFSU CREEP Project
This fault-creep-monitoring project was created by Jon Galehouse in 1979, and is funded by the U.S.G.S.'s National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. The project has produced an invaluable and unique data set and has reliably provided research assistantships for more than two dozen SFSU students.
Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies
The Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC) is San Francisco State University's marine and estuarine field station. RTC's mission is to advance the understanding of the world's complex marine and estuarine environments through research, education, and outreach, with a focus on San Francisco Bay.
